Maserati GranTurismo

The Maserati GranTurismo has been one of the most anticipated cars of recent years. Not only is it the first all-new Maserati since the introduction of the Quattroporte, but it is also a truly exceptional car – a stylish two-door with space for four, combined with terrific handling and performance.

At last, the wait is coming to an end. Following the official launch at the Geneva Auto Show in March and the highly anticipated first press test drives in Italy in May, the first GranTurismos are now being delivered to dealers in North America, giving even more people the opportunity to admire the Pininfarina design – at once sexy, stylish and aggressive.

I have a GT currently on the assembly line. I test drove the demo on the first day it was available, November 1. The car is exactly what it was intended to be, a luxury core design with a solid, long-distance driving capability. The exterior is stunning, the interior is plush, fine Italian leather with hand polished wood trim. The car is the easiest to drive car I have ever been in. Controls are where they should be and easily understandable. The throttle-by-wire gave instant response to my pedal input. Braking with both pedal and transmission was smooth. The auto adjusting gearbox gave almost unnoticeable shifts after a few minutes to adjust to my style. Turning at normal speeds was like a video game. I turned the wheel and saw the scenery move, but didn't feel any side forces. This worked at both busy Interstate and city traffic speeds. Steering was smooth and sure. Sport mode gave some road feedback, and comfort gave a smooth ride in city traffic. The back seat was as well appointed as the front seats. Back legroom is a bit short with the front seats back, but still well above 2+2 sport cars. The websites maserati.com and granturismoisback.com have an online configurator that allow you a dozen different views of your configuration. There are almost endless color choices.

This car is designed to be an everyday car, and a long distance driving pleasure. It is the only car I could find in the $100K+ price range that fits between the BMW/Mercedes and 911/'vette. It has more eye-popping looks than the Aston-Martin or Bentley and the 405 hp Ferrari engine has plenty of pep for all but the most demanding drivers. It is a performance car that the average driver can easily drive right off the lot with no trouble.
